TICO Document #: SFN-20240905A (formelry TES 287)
Description of Procedure: If a trailer, with a faulty electrical system, is hooked to the tractor via the 7-way plug, it can transmit an electrical short that can cause the trailer ABS fuse to fail. Quick access to replace the fuse would reduce service time. Install new hinge style cab entry step over chassis PDC.
Units Affected: Any chassis with a 2017 style cab & a center mounted chassis PDC.
Parts Required: KIT - CAB POP-UP STEP FOR CENTER MOUNT PDC, TICO ORANGE, RAL# 2010 P/N 970112 (QTY) 1
Planned Labor: 1 hour
Instructions:
Park vehicle on flat surface, apply parking brake, and chock wheels. If your company utilizes a “Lock Out, Tag Out” policy, you should employ it during this procedure.
Remove the (4) bolts, (4) lock nuts and (8) washers on the cab step grating with a 9/16” socket wrench and 9/16” wrench. The wrench is used to hold the lock nuts below the grating in place.
The mounting hardware & the cab step itself can be discarded, see Figure 2.
Once the cab step is removed, the chassis PDC is now exposed and is ready to accept the upgraded pop-up cab step assembly. See Figure 3.
Locate the left-hand cab step hinged support bracket. See Figure #4.
Using the provided hardware:
- (2) SCREW, BUTTON HD SOC CAP, #8-32 UNC x 3/4" LG, SSTL
- (2) NUT, LOCK, NYLON, #8-32 UNC, SSTL
- (4) WASHER, FLAT, SAE, #8, SSTL
Install the latch with the “paw” facing upward on the support bracket. See Figure #5.
Using the provided hardware:
- (2) SCREW, BUTTON HD SOC CAP, 1/4-20 UNC, 1" LG, SSTL
- (2) NUT, LOCK, NYLON, 1/4-20 UNC, SSTL
- (4) WASHER, FLAT 1/4", SSTL
Install the hinge, as shown on the support bracket, see Figure #6.
Locate the right-hand support bracket and install the latch and hinge as shown on steps 6-9.
When complete, the left & right support brackets are shown in Figure #7
▪ Note: You may want to use some tape to hold the other half of the hinge from becoming loose from the mounted hinge.
Locate the new cab step.
Using the provided hardware: Install the latch keeper facing downward on the cab step, see Figure #8.
- (2) SCREW, BUTTON HD SOC CAP, #8-32 UNC x 3/4" LG, SSTL
- (2) NUT, LOCK, NYLON, #8-32 UNC, SSTL
- (4) WASHER, FLAT, SAE, #8, SSTL
Using the provided hardware: Install the black Front Cover Plate, as shown in Figure #9.
- (4) BOLT, HEX HD, 1/4-20 UNC X 1" LG, GRD 8, STEEL, ZINC PLT
- (4) NUT, LOCK, NYLON, 1/4-20 UNC, STEEL, ZINC PLT
- (8) WASHER, FLAT, 1/4", SAE, GRD 8, STEEL, ZINC PLT
Note: the direction of the bolt, relative the Front Cover Plate & Cab Step
Locate the Cab Step Isolators. These parts are handed (i.e. left-handed & right-handed) and have an adhesive backing. See Figure #10.
Clean the undersurface area of the cab step with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry.
Remove the protective paper backing to expose the adhesive.
Install the cab step isolators as shown in Figure #11.
- The cab step isolators should not protrude past the edge of the step.
Locate the (2) Cab Spacers. These parts are unhanded however, upon installation, the arrow will point towards the front of the cab. See Figure #12.
Using the provided hardware, see Figure #13:
- (2) BOLT, HEX HD, 1/4-20 UNC, 1-1/2" LG, SSTL
- (2) WASHER, FLAT, 1/4", SAE, GRD 8, STEEL, ZINC PLT
- (2) WASHER, LOCK, HELICAL SPRING, 1/4", STEEL, ZINC PLT
Note: the installation order of the lock & flat washers.
Install a cab spacer on the top of the chassis PDC bracket.
Place the left-hand cab step hinged support bracket under the cab bar mounting.
- The bolts will pass through the cab spacer, the chassis PDC, the cab bar mounting and thread into the weld nut on the cab step hinged support bracket. See Figure #14.
Repeat the procedure on the right-hand side with the hardware from page 15.
Using the provided hardware, Install the cab step by fastening the hinge to the step. See Figure #15.
- (2) SCREW, BUTTON HD SOC CAP, 1/4-20 UNC, 1" LG, SSTL
- (2) NUT, LOCK, NYLON, 1/4-20 UNC, SSTL
- (4) WASHER, FLAT 1/4", SSTL
▪ Note: The orientation of the screw itself, the head will be on the top side of the cab step.
Repeat the procedure for the right-hand side.
▪ Note: This process may require the technician to tilt the cab to give proper clearance to install the hardware.
The completed installation would be as follows, See Figure 16.
To Tilt up the Pop-Up Cab Step
Lift handle up & rotate the latch handle counter-clockwise. This will cause the latch paw to disengage from the latch keeper. The left-hand side latch shown, see Figure #17 & #18.
Repeat the process on the right-hand side latch.
- The pop-up step can now be rotated for servicing of the chassis PDC.
To Stow the Pop-Up Cab Step
Flip the cab step down and rotate the latch handle so the paw fully extended. See Figure #19 & #20.
Rotate the latch handle clockwise to the paw of the latch engages the keeper on the cab step.
Once fully latch is fully engaged, push the latch handle downwards in it’s stow position. The left-hand side latch shown, see Figure #21.
Repeat the process on the right-hand side latch.
Remove “Lock Out, Tag Out” plaque.
Return vehicle to service.
