Description of Procedure: Install braided ground strap from under step chassis PDC ground stud to driver side frame rail. To create a more adequate chassis ground

Units Affected: Diesel-powered units with new cab style

Parts Required: KIT - GROUND STRAP, UNDER STEP CHASSIS PDC TO DRIVER SIDE FRAME RAIL, DIESEL. 970046 (QTY 1)

Planned Labor: 30 minutes


Instructions:

  1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface, apply a parking brake, and chock wheels. If your company utilizes a “Lock Out, Tag Out” policy, you should employ it during this procedure.


  2. To access the ground stud on chassis PDC, begin removing the transmission cover grating by taking out the 3/8”-16 hardware (See Figure #1).

  3. Be sure to set aside hardware for reinstallation of gratings.


  1. Once the transmission cover grating has been taken off, begin removing the 3/8”-16 brass nut from the PDC’s ground stud located on the aft side of the chassis PDC (See Figure #2). Discard 3/8”-16 brass nut.

  2. Remove the internal tooth lock washer from the stud (See Figure #3). Be sure to retain the lock washer for later in this procedure.

  3. Remove all ground terminals from the stud.


  1. Install one end of the braided ground strap to the ground stud.

  2. Reinstall all other ground cables on top of the ground strap’s terminal (See Figure #4).

  3. Install the provided 3/8”-16 low profile nut, supplied in the field service kit, and the previously removed lock washer to PDC ground stud.

  4. Be sure to torque the 3/8”-16 nut between 72 and 96 inlbs.


  1. Find the transmission cover bracket located on the inside of the driver-side frame rail. (See Figure #5)

  2. Remove only the bottom 3/8”-16 transmission cover bracket mounting bolt.

  3. Use an abrasive tool to remove the finish from the inside of the open mounting hole in the frame and bracket (See Figure #6).


  1. Install the other side of the braided ground strap using the 3/8”-16 hardware that was just removed (See Figure #7).

  2. Ensure the torque value for the transmission cover bracket mounting bolt is approximately 35 ft-lbs.


  1. Reinstall the transmission cover grating with the 3/8” hardware that was previously set aside. (See Figure #8)

  2. Be sure to torque mounting bolts to 35 ft-lbs.


  1. Remove “Lock Out, Tag Out” plaque.


  1. Return vehicle to service.
