Issue: Transmission fault codes cannot be cleared from the speedometer memory

Description of Procedure: Reset the speedometer on a 2017-III Series Cab (master reset)

Units Affected: 2017-III series cab

Parts Required: None

Planned Labor: Less than 15 minutes


This procedure is used in the event engine and transmission fault codes cannot be cleared from the speedometer memory. Typically, when a technician uses a laptop via the dash OBD port to clear transmission or engine faults, the speedometer memory is also cleared. However, in some cases relative to transmission fault codes, when the codes are cleared via the Generation V transmission controller, the speedometer will retain the previous fault codes. A master reset of the speedometer is required.

Instructions:

  1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface, apply the parking brake, and chock wheels. If your company utilizes a “Lock Out, Tag Out” policy, you should employ it during this procedure.


  2. Enter the vehicle cab (sitting in the driver’s seat) to view the speedometer gauge. (See Figure 1.)

  3. Turn the ignition key to battery and turn the park lights on.

  4. From the NORMAL mode, press the MODE button once.


  1. Use the up and down buttons to select EDIT MENU. (See Figure 2.)

  1. Press and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds to enter the EDIT MENU option.

    Note: Display will show the following: “PLEASE HOLD MODE FOR LONGER THAN 1 SECOND” if MODE button is held for less than 5 seconds for a selection. (See Figure 3.)


  1. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to select SYSTEM. See Figure 4.

  1. Press and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds to enter the SYSTEM option.


  1. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to select MASTER RESET. (See Figure 5.)

  1. Press and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds to enter the MASTER RESET option.


  1. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to select YES to perform MASTER RESET. (See Figure 6.)

  1. Press and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds to enter “YES”.


A warning message will display for five seconds while beeping three times, which is then replaced with “ CONTINUE WITH MASTER RESET?” (See Figures 7 and 8.)

  1. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to select YES.

  2. Press and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds to enter “YES”. (See Figure 8.)

  • If “YES” is selected, the Speedometer will be reset to the latest software settings and clear all fault codes within the display.

  • If “NO” is selected, the Speedometer will exit the SYSTEM menu.


Upon initiating the reset, you will be required to set some user-defined selections. (See Figure 9.)

  1. Press the UP and DOWN buttons to choose a LANGUAGE.


The screen will display a selection for ENGINE TYPE. (See Figure 10.)

  1. Press the UP and DOWN buttons to select the ENGINE TYPE for your truck. 

  • LP

  • GASOLINE

  • TIER III

  • TIER IV

  • ISB/15

  • CUMMINS CNG

  1. Press and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds to enter ENGINE type.


The screen will display to select ALL UNITS. (See Figure 11.)

  1. Press the UP and DOWN buttons to select the desired units, US (English) or EURO (Metric).

  1. Press and hold the MODE button for 5 seconds to enter UNITS type.

    The speedometer will initiate a self-test and update itself with the selections. At the end of reset, the speedometer will return to main operating screen.


This is what the final screen will look like upon completion of a master reset.


  1. Verify the correct operation of the speedometer.


  1. Turn the park lights off and turn the ignition key to the off position.


  1. Remove the “Lock Out, Tag Out” plaque.


  1. Return the vehicle to service.
