Prev Next

TICO Document #: SFN-20231019B (formerly TES-248)

Complication: The cab protection bar undergoes stresses that negatively impact the structure of the cab protection bar itself, causing it to be compromised under certain applications.

Description of Procedure: Add a reinforcement to the right-hand inner post of the cab protection bar

Units Affected: Tractors with QSB Tier IV Final aftertreatments

Parts Required: (Based on cab protection bar finish)

Painted BRACKET, REINFORCEMENT, RHS POST, CAB BAR, QSB-IV 123320 (QTY) 1

Galvanized BRACKET, REINFORCEMENT, RHS POST, CAB BAR, QSB-IV, GALV 123349 (QTY) 1

Planned Labor: 1 hour

Instructions:

  1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface, apply the parking brake, and chock wheels. If your company utilizes a “Lock Out, Tag Out” policy, you should employ it during this procedure.

  2. Locate the area on the cab protection bar where the reinforcement is to be installed. See Figure #3.

  1. Protect the surrounding area components from the surface preparation and the welding process. See Figures #4 & #5.

Caution: Prior to surface preparation and the welding process, disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery.

  1. Dry fit the reinforcement into the desired location to determine the area needed to be prepared for welding. See Figures #6 & #7.

  1. Follow welding documentation for the (3) plug welds and the (1) vertical side weld. Welding should be performed in accordance with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code. See Figure #8.

Do Not add any horizontal welds in this area.

  1. Refinish the repair area once the cab protection bar has cooled.

  • If painted, repaint the affected area with a high-zinc content paint to a color RAL# 9005. See Figure #9.

  • If galvanized, coat affected area with CRC Zinc-it or equivalent. See Figure #10.

  1. Re-install all items that were removed or displaced from the repair area.

  1. Reconnect the main power battery cable to the battery.

  1. Remove “Lock Out, Tag Out” plaque.

  1. Return vehicle to service.
