TICO Document #: SFN-20231013D (formerly TES 226)
Description of Procedure: Install the MP Filtri hydraulic filter and gasket to the filter head assembly mounted to the hydraulic tank
Units Affected: N/A
Parts Required: FILTER, HYDRAULIC, 10 MICRON, SPIN-ON STYLE, W/ GASKET 621172 (QTY) 1
Instructions:
Park the vehicle on a flat surface, apply a parking brake, and chock wheels. If your company utilizes a “Lock Out, Tag Out” policy, you should employ it during this procedure.
Close the hydraulic shut-off valves to isolate the filter and any residual pressure in the hydraulic lines.
With the appropriate filter wrench, remove the hydraulic filter from the filter head assembly by spinning it counterclockwise. Be sure to use a receptacle to catch any hydraulic fluid that leaks from the system as the hydraulic filter is removed from the filter head assembly. A picture of the bottom of the filter head assembly is shown in Figure #2.
Once the existing filter is removed, replace it with a new filter (P/N: 621172), as shown in Figure #1.
Inspect and clean filter head sealing surface prior to installation of the gasket.
IMPORTANT: Use the thicker gasket that is packaged with the filter itself, which has been designed to meet the installation requirements of the MP Filtri filter head assembly. Discard the thinner gasket that is packaged with the filter, as it will not seal properly to this particular filter head assembly and will cause a failure of the filter itself during operation. Review the differences in Figures #3 & #4.
Lightly coat the filter gasket with clean hydraulic fluid prior to installation.
Install the gasket into the filter head assembly.
Install the hydraulic filter by spinning the filter clockwise until hand tight.
Clean the outside of the hydraulic filter.
With the appropriate filter wrench, tighten filter no more than 3/4 turn to confirm a good seal. See Figure #5.
Open the hydraulic shut-off valves to allow flow into the filter and the hydraulic tank.
Start the vehicle and inspect the connection of the filter head to the filter for signs of leakage.
If there is no leakage, go to step 13.
If there is any leakage, stop the engine and follow the previous steps to remove the filter again. Look for these possible issues:
Incorrect gasket installed on filer head. Install the correct O-ring in the filter head. See Figure #3.
The filter is not tightened enough. Filter should be tightened to ensure a proper seal. When installing the filter, it should be screwed clockwise on the filter head at hand tight. With the appropriate filter wrench, it then should be tightened approximately 3/4 turn. Do not over-tighten, the filter treads could be damaged and cause failure of the filter itself.
Filter being replaced after a failure: If you are replacing a filter after a filter failure, the thread on the filter head may have been damaged during the event. It is TICO recommendation to replace the filter head to ensure a proper connection between the filter and the filter head. Contact your local TICO representative for p/n: 60556-2 [FILTER BASE, PTO RETURN].
Approved filter replacements that are matched to the hydraulic filter head:
Operate the boom via the cab control at engine idle to purge air bubbles from the system.
Check the hydraulic fluid level and add additional hydraulic fluid to the proper level in sight class.
Remove “Lock Out, Tag Out” plaque.
Return vehicle to service.
