TICO Document #: SFN-20250320A (TES-289)
Description of Procedure: Field installation of radiator shroud on Volvo Penta Units.
Units Affected: All Volvo Penta Units with TITANX radiator
Parts Required: KIT, PENTA RADIATOR ENCLOSURE, TITANX RADIATOR P/N: 970143 (qty 1)
Planned Labor: 2 hours
Instructions:
Park vehicle on a flat surface, apply parking brake and chock wheels. If your company utilizes a “LOCK-OUT” TAG OUT” policy. You should employ it during this procedure. Unit does not need to be decommissioned to complete this procedure as it does not affect any high voltage system. See Figure 1.
On the cab fender, locate the coolant reservoir enclosure lid, 124054 and remove lid and place to the side. See Figure 2
On the coolant reservoir enclosure, If the tank enclosure does not have holes as shown in Figure 3, modify the reservoir enclosure using Drawing No. 970143 or at the end of this TES for dimensions.
NOTE: Holes that need to be added may vary depending on which revision of P/N 124956 is present in kit. ENSURE CORRECT DRILLING DIMENSIONS BEFORE MODIFYING TANK ENCLOSURE
If the reservoir enclosure has these holes, skip this step
- On the TitanX Radiator, locate the side cover as shown in Figure 4, remove the all hardware holding the side cover and place them on the side. This hardware will be reused later, see Figure 4A.
Remove and discard side cover by any means. See Figure 5
NOTE: Take caution when removing the deaeration hose, as coolant will escape. Be sure to reconnect the hose and refill any lost coolant.
Locate P/N: 124954 inside kit.
Reuse the five mounting holes that previously held the side cover, and the saved hardware from the previous step to install the component into the radiator. Torque bolts to 20 ft-lb. See Figure 6 & Figure 6A.
Locate P/N: 124956 inside kit. Place component as shown in Figure 7, using the newly created holes on reservoir enclosure.
Use four 3/8”- 16 X 1.5” LG bolt, 3/8” lock washers and washer hardware that is inside the kit to install component as shown in Figure 8. Torque bolts to 35 ft-lb.
If done correctly, the top of 124956 should be level with the top of the reservoir enclosure and the back of 124956 should be flush with the back of the reservoir enclosure. See Figure 8 & 8A
Locate P/N: 124949 inside kit. Place component as shown in Figure 9, ensure that the fins are in the correct position. Use four 3/8”-16 X 1” LG bolt, 3/8” lock washers and washer hardware that is inside the kit to install component as shown in Figure 9A. Torque bolts to 35 ft-lb.
Locate P/N: 124963 inside kit. Place component as shown in Figure 10. Use two 1/4”-20 X 1” LG bolt, 1/4” lock washers and washer hardware that is inside the kit to install component as shown in Figure 10A. Torque bolts to 108 in-lb.
Locate P/N: 124964 inside kit. Place component as shown in Figure 11. Use four 1/4”-20 X 1” LG bolt, 1/4” lock washers and washer hardware that is inside the kit to install component as shown in Figure 11A. Torque bolts to 108 in-lb.
Locate P/N: 124960 inside kit. Place component as shown in Figure 12. Use eight 1/4”-20 X 1” LG bolt, 1/4” lock washers and washer hardware that is inside the kit to install component as shown in Figure 12A. Torque bolts to 108 in-lb.
Reinstall coolant reservoir cover. Install complete.
